Tips for Writing a Great Sales Script

A good sales script prepares you for the moment when you connect with a prospect. It’s not meant to be a word-for-word recitation, but it does help you think about what you want to say. An organized, written script helps you in those moments when you’re momentarily tongue-tied, too.

How Do You Write a Good Sales Script?

A good sales script starts with research and thinking. Consider who your target audience is and what you are selling.

Find out as much as you can about the product or service and the demographic you are working with. What are the challenges your prospects face that you could help them with? What are their worries? What is on their mind most often? When you know your audience, you can write a script addressing exactly what they need and offer them the best value.

Your next step is to write down all the benefits your product or service offers. Look back at what your prospects are thinking about and connect the dots. What solutions does your offering make to solve some of their worries? How does it add value to the lives of your prospects?

Tips for Writing a Great Sales Script

When writing a sales script, you will want to:

  • Ask strong questions: Questions get your audience to stop and think. Ask questions that target their priorities like “How much time does it take you to train new hires right now?” or “How much money could you save if you reduced cancelled reservations by 70%?” These questions get your listeners to think of their own lives and consider your products or services as solutions in their everyday life.
  • Practice listening: Practice your script with a friend or colleague and pay attention to how much time you spend talking and listening. Your pitch should be to the point and should focus on the prospect. You should also spend more time in your script listening than talking. If not, revise, revise and revise until you get it right.

A Sales Script Example

“Hi, my name is Joanie, and I help busy companies connect with more customers through a fully interactive CRM program that reduces customer call-backs and complaints by 70%. How many new clients and leads were you hoping to get this year?”

Leave space for an answer.

“That sounds wonderful. What do you find most challenging and costly about finding new leads?”

Leave space for an answer.

“I was in the field for 10 years and experienced the same thing. I’d love to set up a 5-minute call with you to help figure out a way you can get full documentation for your first 100 clients free of charge while making your lead data 100% actionable. What time would work for you?”
